By Rana Irfan Rafi — We all use plastic bags regularly. When we go shopping, we buy groceries in plastic bags. Even when we buy fresh food, it is often packed in plastic bags. When we visit the fruit and vegetable market or the pharmacy to buy medicine, we are likely to encounter plastic bags. Due to their lightweight, durable, convenient nature, low production cost, and ease of transportation, plastic bags have become a preferred choice in various aspects of our lives, making them popular with both retailers and consumers.
Plastic bags have become an indispensable part of our daily lives. They come in different sizes, making them useful for transporting different items. Additionally, plastic bags are water-resistant, which helps prevent items from getting wet, making them convenient for transporting groceries and other food items.
However, we may not be aware of the environmental impact of using plastic bags and disposing of them improperly. We often use plastic bags without considering the impact on the environment when we throw them away. It is important to keep in mind the environmental consequences of using and disposing of plastic bags.
We see that there are plastic bags and wrappers everywhere, in parks, streets, and even along roadsides. Who is responsible for all this? After using plastic bags, we don’t know where to dispose of these wrappers and plastic bags. We feel happy to throw plastic bags anywhere without knowing how it affects our lives. When we use plastic bags, we don’t know how to dispose of them after use.
There are many negative effects associated with the use of plastic bags in our lives.
Plastic bags are lightweight and easily blown away by the wind, often resulting in litter and environmental pollution. It can damage water bodies, forests, and other wildlife. Its pollution can affect the ecosystem and damage the balance of the local environment. Plastic bags dumped in the open area can block drainage systems, lead to flooding and waterlogging during heavy rains, damage infrastructure and homes, and, because of waterlogging, there may also be a risk of spreading diseases like malaria and dysentery, etc. Plastic bags are made from polymers and ethylene monomer. There are two types of plastic bags: high-density polyethylene and low-density polyethylene. High-density polyethylene is commonly used for grocery bags, trash bags, and other types of packaging. Low-density polyethylene, a more flexible plastic, is used to package bread and other types of food.
The manufacturing process of plastic bags releases harmful pollutants into the air, which can cause respiratory diseases and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. When we expose plastic bags to high temperatures, such as microwaves and sunlight, their chemicals are absorbed into the food and can cause food poisoning; it also increases the risk of bone disease. When plastic bags are disposed of on the ground, they take hundreds of years to decompose, collecting soil, taking up space, and polluting the environment. When it is thrown into water. It harms marine life. Wildlife, both on land and in water, can be negatively affected by plastic bags. Plastic bags can be eaten as food by animals. Wildlife can also become trapped in plastic bags, causing suffocation. There is growing concern about their potential impact on human health.
Plastic bags are often used for a short time and then discarded, contributing to the growing problem of solid waste generation. Plastic bags can persist in the environment for hundreds of years.
The economic costs associated with their adverse effects, such as cleanup efforts, waste management, and health outcomes, are significant and can be borne by communities and taxpayers. How can we control the use of plastic bags in our lives? Everyone should play their part to reduce the use of plastic bags. How can we keep our environment clean by using plastic bags due to these negative effects. there is a growing awareness and movement towards reducing the use of plastic bags and finding more sustainable alternatives, such as reusable bags made of cloth or canvas. It is important that we adopt practices in our daily lives to reduce the negative impact of plastic bags on the environment and society. This may include reducing the consumption of plastic bags, disposing of them properly, and promoting sustainable alternatives. Therefore, using fewer plastic bags and finding sustainable alternatives is very important for our future generations. We can play our part to reduce the negative impact of plastic bags in our lives. What can be done to effectively control the use of plastic bags in our society?
Governments can ban single-use plastic bags, which can encourage consumers to switch to reusable bags or other sustainable alternatives. Educating the public about the benefits of using reusable bags, such as cloth or canvas bags, can reduce the use of plastic bags. Environmental problems can be reduced by improving the recycling program used to dispose of plastic, by educating the public about the recycling program, and by providing separate waste bins for plastic disposal. should be Encouraged to reduce the use of plastic bags through policy changes or other measures. Negative effects of plastic bags on the environment
By creating awareness, the use of plastic bags can be reduced. Its implementation and effective control can only be possible if the public, government, and social institutions and organizations work together. Develop a proper awareness plan to control the use of plastic bags.
(SDPI) has been working on plastic bag pollution issues for many years, raising awareness about the negative effects of plastic bags, and continues to develop sustainable alternatives and make policy changes to reduce plastic pollution in Pakistan. The Sustainable Development Policy Institute in Islamabad continues to work on the problems of plastic pollution and has conducted several research projects and campaigns related to the control of plastic bags in Pakistan, but even after raising awareness, not only in Islamabad but throughout the whole country, it needs to do more. The government should involve the social organization and spread its awareness throughout the country. The government should make proper policies and regulations. The government should impose on-the-spot fines for the use of plastic bags. Health teams should visit public places, grocery stores, and any other place where it may be used; they should even levy small fines on consumers as well as fine shops that use plastic bags, etc., regarding this issue and strictly implement it to control the use of plastic bags.
