Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, said on Wednesday that his country still intends to hold elections a month earlier than expected despite an earthquake that struck southern Turkey last month and left large portions of it devastated. Erdogan chastised those who criticised the way the government handled the quake’s aftermath in a speech to lawmakers of his ruling party, saying the public would respond to them on May 14. Erdogan didn’t say whether displaced survivors would be able to cast ballots in their new locations or how the elections might be managed in the earthquake zone. —Agencies
