Several churches and dozens of houses were set on fire during the riots between tribal people and non-tribal people in the Indian state of Manipur.
According to Indian media, there are continuing violent protests and attacks on one another’s homes and property in Imphal, the state capital.
After six people were killed in violent ethnic clashes, the government sent out hundreds of military personnel and shut down internet access.
In the eight areas that were most negatively impacted, curfew was implemented. Additionally, there were reports of people being burned.
Conflicts erupted because tribal organisations objected to the Meitei ethnic group’s demands to be classified as a “Scheduled Tribe” by the government.
According to Indian law, reserved quotas are given to people of these tribes for employment with the government and college admissions as an affirmative action measure to combat systemic inequity and discrimination.
