According to UN Relief Chief Martin Griffiths, the current death toll of 28,000 from the massive earthquake in Syria and Turkey will at least double. In the city of Kahramanmaras in southern Turkey, Griffiths arrived on Saturday. Griffiths stated: “I think it is difficult to estimate precisely as we need to get under the rubble but I’m sure it will double or more” in an interview with Sky News on Saturday. He stated, “We haven’t really started to count the number of dead. According to officials and medical personnel, 24,617 people died in Turkey and 3,574 in Syria. 28,191 has been confirmed as the final number. Despite freezing weather that has made millions of people’s misery worse, tens of thousands of rescuers are searching flattened neighborhoods.
