According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, around 24 million domestic tourist journeys were made during China’s Qingming Festival, which falls on Wednesday. This is an increase of 22.7% over the previous year.
According to the ministry, the excursions were expected to generate 6.52 billion yuan (about 945 million USD) in tourism earnings, an increase of 29% from the previous year.
This year’s Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, did not include three consecutive days off over the course of the weekend, so many Chinese people went on one-day sightseeing tours instead.
According to data from Alibaba’s Fliggy travel division, bookings for tourism-related services increased six-fold on Wednesday compared to the same day last year. Popular vacation spots included museums and theme parks.
