Nokia is getting ready to build up a 4G mobile network on the moon later this year in order to advance lunar discoveries and ultimately pave the way for human presence on the satellite planet.

The Finnish telecommunications operator reportedly intended to launch the network aboard a SpaceX rocket in the upcoming months, according to a post on the cellular business’s official website.

A solar-powered rover and an antenna-equipped base station, both of which are housed inside the Nova-C lunar lander manufactured by Intuitive Machines, will support the network.

An LTE connection will be established between the lander and the rover.

The infrastructure will land on the southern limb of the moon’s Shackleton crater, according to the article.

The technology is designed to withstand the harsh elements of space, claims Nokia.

The network will be utilised by the Artemis 1 project, which aims to launch the first human explorers to set foot on the moon’s surface since 1972.
