A significant step is the decision by longtime allies Pakistan and China to increase their collaboration in meteorological science and technology.

The event took place last week in Beijing during a gathering of meteorological officers and specialists from China and Pakistan.

According to China Economic Net (CEN), both parties evaluated their cooperation in the area of meteorological science and technology and held consultations on issues such early warning support systems, operational capacity building, and training.

During the meeting, China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Deputy Administrator Zhang Zuqiang said that Beijing looks forward to promoting the construction of cloud-based early warning supporting system with Pakistan.

“Pakistan will continue to support CMA in international meteorological governance,” said Mahr Sahibzad Khan, Director General of Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and permanent representative of Pakistan with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). “Pakistan is grateful for CMA’s technical support when Pakistan was hit by severe floods last year.”

Mahr Sahibzad Khan and the Pakistani delegation also paid visits to important CMA organisations to learn more about the development of Pakistan’s cloud-based early warning assistance system and to talk about strategies specifically tailored to Pakistan. In terms of monitoring, forecasting, hydrology, communication, research, and training, he stated, “PMD and CMA will expand cooperation.”

Important WMO Regional Association II members include Pakistan and China. For the growth of meteorology in Asia, bilateral collaboration between the two nations is crucial.
