The Global South and its growing role in global modernization

Accounting for nearly 85 percent of the world’s population, contributing over 40 percent of global economic output, and driving approximately 80 percent of global economic growth, the Global South has emerged as one of the most influential forces shaping the contemporary international order. Its collective journey toward modernization represents a historic shift in global development dynamics and economic leadership.

For much of the 20th century, countries of the Global South—spanning Asia, Africa, Latin America, and parts of the Middle East—remained largely excluded from global decision-making despite their demographic and economic potential. In recent decades, however, this reality has begun to change. Rapid industrialization, expanding middle classes, technological adoption, and regional cooperation have transformed many Global South economies into engines of global growth.

Today, emerging and developing nations are playing an increasingly central role in global supply chains, trade networks, and investment flows. Their progress is influencing international markets, reshaping development models, and redefining partnerships across regions. At the same time, countries of the Global South continue to advocate for inclusive growth, sustainable development, and fair representation in global governance institutions.

As cooperation among these nations deepens, the Global South’s modernization is not only altering economic balances but also contributing to a more diversified and multipolar world order. This transformation underscores a fundamental shift in global history—one in which the future of growth, resilience, and development is increasingly driven by the developing and emerging world.
