On Wednesday, President Dr Arif Alvi announced the appointment of Justice Qazi Faez Isa as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP). Justice Isa will assume the position on September 17, 2023, following the retirement of the current CJP, Umar Ata Bandial.
According to Article 179 of the Constitution, Justice Bandial is set to retire on September 16, 2023, upon reaching the age of 65, unless he resigns or is removed from office. In adherence to Article 175(a)(3) of the Constitution, President Alvi appointed Justice Isa as the most senior Judge of the Supreme Court, making him the designated CJP.
The official swearing-in ceremony for Justice Isa will be held on September 17, during which he will assume his responsibilities as the Chief Justice of Pakistan. In his new role, Justice Isa has expressed his commitment to promoting transparency in the formation of benches and the allocation of cases within the judicial system.
Justice Isa has an impressive judicial career, having served as a Supreme Court judge since September 5, 2014. Prior to that, he held the position of Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court from 2009 to 2014.
With Justice Isa’s appointment as the next Chief Justice, Pakistan anticipates his contributions to the judiciary and the furtherance of justice within the country.
